Municipalities have done a terrible job of administering a safety program that could make important contributions to removing dangerous drivers from city roads. But that does not excuse the Ontario government from its threat to remove speed cameras altogether within the Province. Speed cameras have become a political, fall football, kicked around to attract upcoming voters.
As typical with municipal government a lack of transparency regarding speed camera programs has led to many citizens distrusting its intentions and Premier Ford exploited this weakness to his political advantage regardless of the detrimental road safety implications. The net safety benefit of speed cameras is negated by municipal secrecy about how traffic fines are applied including the threshold speed at which those fines are applied. A single truth in Ford’s comments is that speed cameras should not target drivers who just barely cross over the speed limit. But no one knows exactly what the threshold is which causes a fine to be applied. It is no wonder that Ford has been successful in turning many members of the public against speed cameras all due to municipal secrecy.
